Kathomi Gatwiri, PhD
Academic. Author. Speaker.
My name is Dr. Kathomi Gatwiri, and I am an award-winning community educator, activist and teacher. Based at Southern Cross University in the Gold Coast, Queensland, I teach in the School of Arts and Social Sciences across a range of subjects.
I have completed a PhD with an interdisciplinary thesis entitled 'African womanhood, Health, Sexuality & Incontinent Bodies: A Case of Kenyan women living with Vaginal Fistulas'. I also have a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Social Work and Social policy) with First Class Honours.
My first book, African Womanhood & Incontinent Bodies, which discusses the social structures underpinning the 'hidden disease' of vaginal fistulas in Kenya, is now available.
I write regular articles for academic journals, as well as popular websites such as The Conversation and SBS, on topics related to race, popular culture, feminism and immigration. I also speak on these topics and more.
Please find samples of my work here on this site and feel free to contact me to discuss any research, writing or speaking needs.
